Marguerite Duras is a fine writer and whilst I quite enjoyed this novella I found the style rather strange. Perhaps the translation adds to this. Nonetheless the story of a poor French family growing up in Indochina (Vietnam), although short on words, has the power to impact on the reader. Marguerite Duras was born Marguerite Donnadieu on 4 April , in Gia Định, Cochinchina, French Indochina (now Vietnam). Her parents, Marie (née Legrand, ) and Henri Donnadieu (), were teachers from France who likely had met at Gia Định High School.
